Der Autor: Martin Thöni, geboren 1947 in Langtaufers/Graun im Vinschgau (Südtirol), ist Geologe. Seine ersten geistigen Kontakte mit den Völkern und Kulturen Indiens und Tibets hatte der Autor im Jahr 1972, als er auf dem Landweg von Wien nach Indien reiste. In der Bergwelt von Himachal Pradesh begann er die Feldarbeit für seine Dissertation – und seit dieser Zeit hat ihn der Himalaja nicht mehr losgelassen. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt Bilder von insgesamt acht, teilweise mehrmonatigen Aufenthalten im höchsten Gebirge und Hochland der Erde. Martin Thöni forscht und lehrt an der Universität Wien, sein Hauptinteressensgebiet ist die Isotopenanalytik, insbesondere die radiometrische Altersbestimmung.
The Author: Martin Thöni, born in 1947 in Langtaufers/Graun im Vinschgau (South Tyrol) is a geologist. His first contact with the people and cultures of India and Tibet was in 1972, when the author travelled over land from Vienna to India. In the mountain world of Himachal Pradesh he began the fieldwork for his dissertation – and since then the Himalayas have not let him go. This book displays pictures from a total of eight stays, sometimes many months long, in the highest mountains and plateau on Earth. Martin Thöni teaches and researches at the University of Vienna, his main area of interest is isotope analysis, particularly radiometric dating.
