Der Himalaja, „Maßstab der Erde“ (Kalidasa), bildet zusammen mit dem Tibetischen Hochplateau gewissermaßen das physische Rückgrat Asiens. Diese atemberaubende Hochgebirgsregion stellt auch natur- und kulturhistorisch eine einzigartige Gegend dar, wo sich verschiedene Völker und Religionen seit Jahrtausenden begegnen: Bön, Hinduismus und tibetischer Buddhismus.

„Gesichter des Himalaja“ zeigt Bilder aus einem Zeitraum von 40 Jahren. Vor allem sind es Menschen, denen der Autor im Alltag begegnet ist, aber auch Bilder von Landschaften, Kunstwerken oder Heiligtümern. Der Bilderreigen spannt sich vom Bamiyan-Tal im afgha­nischen Hindukusch über den indischen Westhimalaja (Ladakh, Lahaul, Kulu, Kinnaur) und das nepalesische Kathmandu-Tal bis nach Zentral- und Westtibet. Der begleitende Text beleuchtet ausgewählte Aspekte zu Geschichte, Religion, Natur und Kultur auf dem „Dach der Welt“.

The Book:
The Himalayas, “Yardstick of the Earth” (Kalidasa), together with the Tibetan high plateau, in a sense form the physical backbone of Asia. This breathtaking high mountain region also represents a unique region for natural and art history, where different peoples and religions have encountered each other for millennia: Bon, Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism.

“Faces of the Himalayas” displays pictures taken over a period of 40 years. Above all they are of people whom the author encountered in everyday life, but also pictures of landscapes, artwork or holy places. The photo sets stretch from the Bamyan Valley in the Afghan Hindu Kush to the Indian West Himalayas (Ladakh, Lahaul, Kullu, ­Kinnaur) and the Nepalese Kathmandu Valley to Central and West Tibet. The accompanying text illuminates selected aspects of the history, religion, nature and culture on the “roof of the world”.
